Title:  MARTISCO
Description:  Last year the Finger Lakes railway began leasing these "bluebirds" and now regularly use them on there GS-2 train..........aka the sweep train. Here we see them descending the grade at Martisco as they work their way toward Solvay yard. As you can see they're on welded rail here; at a point not!far west from here the rail is jointed all the way to Geneva. Historically speaking this is the Auburn Road, and it's one of the oldest railroads in the USA. A long time ago there wsed to be a branch from here to Otisco; if you look hard enough you can trace the line still to this day.

Description:  The Pennsy leads Norfolk Southern train 23K down the D&H. Since the D&H is owned by Canadian Pacific this train is technically a foreign movement at this point; hence CP symbol 935. It's now 12:56 and the crew will bring her up to the station where the New York, Susquehanna & Western offices are and tie it down.

Description:  A typical day of railfanning for me starts out in Solvay, NY at CP293 on CSX's water level route. In Solvay CSX interchanges with the Finger Lakes RR and the New York, Susquehanna & Western RR, so you can sometimes see a lot of action there. I got there around 10:00 this morning, then went to DeWitt, came back and noticed that the Geneva-Solvay turn was there. When it was obvious that they were leaving and heading back to Geneva, I decided to make the chase! Here they are approaching Vinegar Hill Road at 13:06.

Description:  First off I want to thank fellow contributor Chris G. for telling me about this one! According to what I heard on the scanner, this is CSX train K01103. Apparently these crude oil trains are new business for CSX and they are placing high priority on these movements. This train is near mile marker 304 on CSX's Rochester subdivision.

Description:  Roughly two hours after leaving Gang Mills the train passes through Himrod Junction at 18:22. The track that goes to the right descends from here, turns, and goes under the track that this train is on, and into the village of Watkins Glen. Last I knew, the Finger Lakes RR hauled salt out of Watkins Glen on this trackage.

Description:  I think this is train GW1 that is just getting into Retsof this afternoon. I'm also thinking that this string of cars are empty salt hoppers destined to be filled at American Rock Salt in Mt. Morris, NY. /////// Well, I learned today (4/17/2012) that I was wrong. The 51 cars on this train were brought into Retsof for cleaning, they did not go to Mt. Morris. And, on the return trip, 96 "clean" cars were hauled away.

Description:  I woke up at 04:00 this morning to get an early start on a full day of railfanning with fellow contributor Jack Jakeman in the Selkirk area. At 04:40 this train hit the defect detector in Memphis, NY. When I met-up with Jack in Amsterdam, I mentioned that it would be great to catch this one! So......just before 11:00 we got it! I should also say that it was very nice to meet fellow contributor Chris G here today! So.....by 11:00 it was a good day; but, we could'nt have known that in a few hours it was gonna get even better in Delanson.
